Soil

Geologically speaking our soils are young, from the Miocene epoch and originate from volcanic basalt. Beautifully structured porous silt sits over brown to red clay and basalt stone, rich in iron and magnesium. Within the rock and stone are iron encrusted sandstone pebbles or ‘buckshot’.

The slope of the land together with the stoney profile allows for good water circulation and drainage. Vine roots are encouraged to run deep and explore the basalt stone at depth.

Across the site there are variations in aspect, slope, biological activity, biomass, clay and stone content. This affects the water and nutrient availability throughout the soil horizon which in turn influences vine growth and fruit expression. The vineyards have been planted with these differences in mind, which we expect will be reflected in the wines.
