Farming Philosophy

All our practices are centred around a balanced farming system. A holistic approach that strives for balance in a complex interaction between the vine, its natural environment and our human impact. We see this balance as essential for grape and wine quality and long term sustainability.

We promote organic matter and biological activity using mulch and compost and by sowing seed in the mid rows. We never use herbicides, but with timely cultivation we control the weeds, aerate the soil and incorporate organic matter, enhancing microbial activity and nutrient cycling.

Cultivation also breaks fibrous surface roots, encouraging vine roots deeper into the clay and rock layers, where water and nutrients are more stable. Deep rooted vines are more resistant to the effects of extreme wet and dry conditions, and they help to create a more resilient vine with superior fruit.

Precise pruning and shoot thinning methods minimise wounds and prevent trunk disease. This promotes sap flow and a flourishing vine with strong and healthy growth.

The growing canopy is managed by hand with many passes through the vineyard to produce an even distribution of shoots, leaves and fruit.

Each year we create a fine balance of sunlight, shade, temperature, humidity, and airflow, all of which significantly influence disease pressure, ripening and quality.
